Schoonhoven, idyllically situated on the river Lek, is known far and wide as the 'Silver City'- and for good reason. Anyone strolling through this historic city will find himself in the midst of factories and businesses, shops and warehouses, galleries and studios or combinations of these that design, produce, exhibit, restore or deal in silver objects. These objects can range from mass-produced to unique examples, from large to small, old to new, from fine art to kitsch. Along side all of this tourists will find the trade school where future gold and silversmiths, jewellers, engravers and clockmakers are trained. <br>The unequivocal high point of all of the activities that have been developed to promote Schoonhoven as the Silver City, must be the National Silver Day, held every year on Whitmonday. Naturally, the Dutch Gold, Silver and Clock Museum as well as the Edelambachtshuis housed in the former synagogue (where a private silver collection is on permanent display) do their part to hold the name of the city high.
