This is the capital of the Chilean Antarctic Territory. It is situated on the border of the Beagle Channel, in Navarino Island. With a population of 2.400 it is considered the southernmost port of the world, naval base and main commercial center in the area. Puerto Williams has a Hostel, an airport, communication systems, a museum and a yacht Club. This is an obligatory stop-point for sailors coming from around the world whether they're starting or ending their journeys to Cape Horn. Initially Puerto Williams was called Puerto Luisa, but in 1956 it was renamed after Juan Williams, who took possession of the Strait of Magellan and its surrounding territories in the name of Chile in 1856. On the Island of Navarino were the biggest settlements of the Yamanas/Yaganes (an ethnic group), which makes the island an important archaeological treasure. Part of this can be seen at the local Museum.
