Port Stanley is a quaint fishing village with one of the finest stretches of sandy beaches on the north shore of Lake Erie. The village is a popular destination for day trippers and for those who want to stay a little longer. It's uniqueness lies with its natural attractions such as the meandering Kettle Creek and the multitude of sailboats that dot its banks. The historical King George VI lift bridge in the center of town is a "must see". Shopping is a treat in the personal boutiques, galleries and specialty shops. The summer theatre productions are highly entertaining. Port Stanley was occupied by the Neutral Indians until 1653, when they were expelled by the Iroquois. In the 1700's many explorers and travelers would portage across Long Point and voyage to the Thames River and further inland exploring. A ferry service between Port Stanley and Buffalo was established in 1832, and by 1833 Port Stanley had become well known as one of the finest harbours on Lake Erie. In the early 1900s, Port Stanley was one of the main tourist attractions on the lake.
