The southeast of Margarita is the most populated part of the island. Porlamar (By the sea, in Spanish) is located there. The city has grown and now Los Robles and Pampatar, initially different towns can be considered part of Porlamar. Very close is the city of El Valle, where Santiago Mariño, an independence hero was born and where the Virgin of El Valle appeared. Finaly, and very close you will find La Asuncion, the capital of the state, and its beatiful Santa Rosa castle. The city that has grown the most in the island is Porlamar. The center of the city is formed by small streets with shops on both sides. That is where you will find the best prices. The most elegant stores are located in the avenues Santiago Mariño and 4 de Mayo (4th of May). To the east of the city, where it is expanding, you will have modern avenues and residential areas
