Hovguard Island is located about 15 kilometres south of Gjoa Haven, where you'll see old camp sites, inuksuit and possibly a caribou or two. For a tour of the island to view caribou, muskoxen, seal or polar bears, you'll want to get in touch with a licensed outfitter or the local Hunters and Trappers Organization , which is also a good source of information about the surrounding land and wildlife. As the ice in the bay lasts for about nine months, you can also travel by snowmobile to Honeymoon Island and Gjoa Haven.
