This town of 27,000 is too big to be a Mayberry, but the swing on the porch of the log-cabin welcome center on U.S. 41 North says a lot about the relaxed, downright friendly atmosphere of the place: "Welcome, y'all." It's a town that still has a vibrant downtown, where you can find a Downtown Diner serving fried green tomatoes, a hardware store known as Homefolks, a farmers market (four days a week from June to October), a library built in 1904 and a shady, inviting Central Park laid out in 1797 after the town was founded. The park - believed to be the oldest municipal park west of the Alleghenies - features a gazebo and a tall, turn-of-the-century Victorian water fountain. The riverfront, where the Mississippi Queen, Delta Queen and other riverboats stop on a regular basis, was recently modernized, including the new fountains. The riverfront is anchored on either end by Audubon Mill and Sunset parks. Plans call for the visitor center to relocate within a year to the riverfront, where the new building will have a railroad depot theme and the tourism bureau will share space with the local genealogical society, which plans displays.
