Castaway Cay is a secluded island, about 175 miles east of Miami. Its former name was Gorda Cay, but Disney bought the island, renamed it, and set into creating the kind of quality attraction the company is famous for. For starters, a ship terminal and pier was constructed, making Castaway Cay the only cruise line private island to boast a pier capable of accommodating big ships. (Other cruise lines will anchor offshore from their resorts and shuttle passengers to the dock via tenders.) Disney Cruises also incorporates a system of trams to transport their passengers from the pier to the various island attractions. Familiar cartoon characters are dispatched to meet arriving trams… all in a very Disney-esque fashion.
