Glennallen is the business hub of the Copper River Basin, one of Alaska's premier outdoor recreation areas. Glennallen visitors can enjoy beautiful rivers, excellent fishing (with dipnetting for Alaska residents), shopping, camping, air sightseeing tours, and McCarthy/Kennicott. Area services include campgrounds, medical center, airport, public boat launch at Lake Louise, gasoline, supplies, school, Sunday Chapel and the Alaska Bible College. Local attractions include the Ahtna Arts and Crafts Fair, a music festival, raft race, parade and salmon bake at the Fourth of July Festival. The name, Glennallen, was derived from Major Edwin Glenn and Lt. Henry Allen, both leaders in the early explorations of the Copper River region. It is one of the few communities in the region that was not built on the site of a Native village. Located 189 miles east of Anchorage by road, Glennallen lies along the Glenn Highway and the Richardson Highway and provides a year-round road crossroads between Anchorage, Fairbanks and other areas of the state. Whatever time of year you visit, remember clothing for layering, light rain gear as well as comfortable walking shoes, binoculars, and a camera with plenty of film.
