Eureka, Nunavut, is on the west coast of Ellesmere Island, only 1,100 km from the north pole. The site has been used for research since 1947, when the weather station was constructed. The station, which is still in operation as one of Canada's High Arctic Weather Stations, consists of several permanent buildings with electricity and heat; operations/accommodations building, maintenance garage, powerhouse, transient barracks, warehouse, vehicle garage, and various other buildings. Also at Eureka, the Polar Continental Shelf Project maintains a research facility. The main building is a Weatherhaven with kitchen and shower facilities, a Base Manager's office and room, four small bedrooms, and a recreation/TV room. Fifteen kilometers from the above facilities is the Arctic Stratospheric Ozone Observatory. This ultra-modern facility was built in 1993 and became a center for international research. The observatory includes four large laboratories, a roof-top observing platform for instrumentation and a small living quarters. Presently the observatory is not operating.
