Enkhuizen is a town in the north-western Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. The municipality covers an area of 116.04 km2 (of which 103.62 km2 water). The municipality of Enkhuizen also includes the following towns, villages and townships: Oosterdijk, Westeinde. During summer ferries for pedestrians and cyclists operate between Enkhuizen and Stavoren (mun. Nijefurd) and between Enkhuizen and Urk. Enkhuizen was one of the harbour-towns of the VOC, just like Hoorn and Amsterdam from where was traded overseas with the East Indies in the Middle-Ages. It received city rights in 1355. Enkhuizen is also the location of the Zuiderzeemuseum, an open-air museum reflecting life in the villages around the Zuiderzee during the Middle-Ages. Most of the buildings in the museum come from various locations in the Netherlands like Purmerend and Amsterdam.
