Dubuque is located on the western bank of the Mississippi River. The oldest city in Iowa, it was settled in 1788 by French-Canadian fur trader and entrepreneur Julien Dubuque. Its steep hills and river bluffs give Dubuque a distinctive landscape. The city has a history in the mining and timber industries. Sometimes called "Masterpiece on the Mississippi," Dubuque offers many sites for visitors. Its natural beauty combined with its rich history makes for a wonderful combination. Drive along river bluffs. View rock out croppings, wildflowers and bald eagles. Colorful Victorian mansions and other historic buildings dot the city. The Old Main Historic District is one such area rich in history. The old Dubuque County Jail is one of the few remaining examples of Egyptian Revival architecture in the country and is now an art gallery. More than a dozen city, county and state parks offer a variety of activities, including hiking, bicycling, horseback riding and boating. Canoeist can put in on the Mississippi, Galena, Little Maquoketa and Grants rivers. Hikers and bicyclists can enjoy a variety of trails and settings. The Heritage Trail is a 26-mile stretch built on a former railroad line. It goes past American Indian mounds, old lead mines and railroad artifacts. The Mines of Spain Recreation Area, a National Historic Landmark, offers hiking trails as well. The park encompasses 1,380 acres and includes a limestone quarry, wetland, marsh, prairies and historic sites. Eagle point park covers 164 acres on a high ridge over looking the Mississippi River. From here visitors can see three states and the General Zebulon Pike Lock and Dam. Several golf courses in the area, including Dubuque Golf & Country Club, the Meadows Golf Club and Eagle Ridge Inn & Resort Golf Courses in Galena, III. Dubuque is host to a number of events every summer. The Rose Festival, the Dubuque County Fair and the Dragon Boat Festival are just a few of the exciting and entertaining happens here. A wide variety of restaurants offer everything from fine dining to fast food.
