Coinjock is located in Currituck County northwest of Kitty Hawk, between Currituck and Grandy along US Hwy 158 on the Intracoastal Waterway near the North River and Currituck Sound. NC cut of the Intracoastal Waterway, The Albemarle Chesapeake Waterway opened in 1859. It is now the Intracoastal Waterway that creates an island separating the Southern mainland from the Northern mainland in Currituck County in Coinjock. As a direct route both north and south, this waterway is a vital and busy water passage from Maine to Florida for both pleasure and commercial vessels. Currituck has several marinas, restaurants, and boat facilities along its portion of the Intracoastal Waterway. Civil war blockade of this canal was in 1862. The Federals took over the Albemarle Sound in February. The Confederates began to block the North Carolina Cut to prevent an attack. They drove pilings and also sunk vessels in the area near Taylor Bay to create the blockade. The canal is five miles long and was constructed by steam dredges from 1855 to 1859. The cut was made to assist commerce. Open year round.
