Cape Breton Island was recently declared the most scenic island in the world by Conde Nast Travel Magazine in its Readers' Choice Awards, and the second friendliest island in the world after Bali. It is located on the northeastern tip of Nova Scotia, and is conveniently joined to the mainland by a causeway. Cape Breton's reputation for making everyone feel welcome has made the island home to over 30 different cultures. Summer through fall, a marvelous assortment of festivals, concerts and parades celebrate this colorful mosaic. Island culture was influenced forever by the arrival of the Scots in the 19th century. Celtic traditions of music making, storytelling and dancing continue to prosper, drawing local fiddlers, pipers, dancers and audiences together for a Ceilidh- that's Gaelic for a stomping good time! Cape Bretoners' willingness to entertain and be entertained is legendary. It's largely inspired by that Celtic spirit which celebrates the day, and the island's sense of humor. Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, fell in love with Cape Breton during a visit and came back for 37 summers. From his home in beautiful Baddeck, Bell pioneered advances in medicine, genetics, aeronautics and agriculture to name only a few. Cape Breton Highlands National Park is for those who live for the outdoors; a lush, natural haven for flora and wildlife. There are 27 walking trails within the park, ranging from gentle strolls to full-fledged hikes. Beaches are found island wide and are rarely crowded. A great surprise on the western shore is the sea temperature - the warmest north of North Carolina! Cape Breton Island is a natural playground all year round for travelers and wildlife. The Cabot Trail, named after the explorer John Cabot who first arrived in 1497, is recognized as one of the world's greatest scenic routes. In the fall, it draws thousands of visitors who come to delight in the brilliant colors of the changing leaves. The Trail runs for 300 km (185 mi.) along lochs and through glens, and along scenic coastlines. To fully appreciate the beauty and majesty of the Cabot Trail, one should drive and walk it in all seasons.
