The town of Buffalo is located in the northwestern Putnam County along the Kanawha River. Steep wooded hillsides constrain the town to the narrow river valley. Incorporated over 160 years ago, the town currently has a population of approximately 1,000 residents. The town has sustained a steady growth rate over the last 30 years, but at a fraction of the growth rate of Putnam County. Most of the growth in Putnam County has occurred along the Interstate 64 corridor that traverses the county east-west.
