Brunswick is a town in southeastern Georgia, and the seat of Glynn County. Brunswick is situated on a landlocked harbor in Oglethorpe Bay, 13 km (8 mi) from the Atlantic Ocean, and 104 km (65 mi) southwest of Savannah. The area was first visited by Spanish missionaries in 1568. In 1736 British colonist General James Edward Oglethorpe built Fort Frederica, which is now Fort Frederica National Monument, in Brunswick. In 1742 a Spanish force invaded Georgia, and in the subsequent Battle of Bloody Marsh, near Fort Frederica, Oglethorpe and his troops defeated the invaders. This ended Spanish attempts to capture Georgia. Brunswick was founded in 1771 by order of the colonial council, and was incorporated as a city in 1856. The town is a year-round resort. Population (1990) 16,443; (2000) 15,600. General James Oglethorpe laid out the City of Brunswick in 1771 in the same strong grid pattern as its better-known Sister City, Savannah. Settlers arrived and remained because of the attraction of the Port. The bustling waterfront is home to private and commercial vessels from all over the world, a marina, and endless activity. The Downtown area features Victorian commercial buildings and offers visitors and residents alike a sole experience with limitless shopping, dining and cultural activities.<br> Among its numerous assets, Brunswick is the second largest concentration of documented historic structures in Georgia. The nearby islands of St. Simons and Jekyll lure visitors with the promise of beaches, resorts, and historic sites—it has long been known as the “Gateway to the Golden Isles”.
