The newly redeveloped Avatiu harbour was opened in April 2013, and Avatiu harbour now provides a greater capacity to cater for larger vessels and the deeper harbour entrance and turning circle allows for larger vessels to berth in the harbour. The port handles about 90% of food imports and 100% of the country’s fuel supply.
