1.1 million acre Nunivak Island is on the west coast of Alaska. The island is managed as part of the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. The southern half of Nunivak Island has been designated wilderness. The islands terrain is varied with sand dunes, cliffs, mountains, tundra, swamps, and rivers. The island also supports a large herd of reindeer introduced in 1920, as well as musk oxen. The animals are owned and managed by the Eskimos of the village of Mekoryuk, the only community on the island.
