In the remote and rarely visited Shumagin Islands, you go ashore at Unga Spit to view the petrified remains of a 40-million-year-old metasequoia forest. We walk the spongy tundra to see miniature shrubs, flowers and lichens, search the tidepools for nudibranches and anemones, and watch for bald eagles and foxes. The beaches are home to Steller sea lions, which can weigh up to 1,200 pounds.
