Danskoya is a small island off the north west corner of Spitsbergen Island in the Svalbard archipelago. The island is dotted with relics from an ill-fated attempt in 1897 by three Swedes to fly a balloon from the island to the North Pole. Their balloon came down because of icing just 240 miles north of Danskøya. Explore the rocky beach to view artifacts from their preparation -- scrap metal, broken piping, brick, and a collapsed wooden shed -- all collectively protected as a historic monument.
