Located some 40 km (25 miles) East of Paris the town of Meaux has witnessed more than 2000 years of important events, from the Gallo-Roman period through the Middle-Ages and the 16 th and 17 th centuries up to the present day. A bishoprie from the very beginning of Gaul christianisation, its main building is St-Etienne's Cathedral. The historical city center was formerly enclosed within a Gallo-Roman rampart, a good part of which can still be admired by visitors. Busy trading town well known for its craftsmen and agricultural resources, its regional gastronomical country tradition is represented by the greatly renown cheese Brie de Meaux. The Episcopal city is a unique character of Meaux. It is a town of history and Art too. Around the Saint Etienne cathedral rises the Episcopal palace and the old Chapitre. This is where the destiny of the powerful archbishopric was decided. Meaux offers a fantastic historic show every evening during the summer.
