Part of the Pearl or Perlas group of islands, Isla del Rey is a small tropical island some fifty miles from Panama's pacific coast and surrounded by many smaller islands. The Perlas Islands owe their name to the abundance of pearls that were once found in the surrounding waters. Here, Spaniards found the famed 31-carat pearl known as "La Peregrina" that was given to the Queen of Spain. Snorkel in search of pearls or simply revel in the diversity of marine species found here. The Perlas Islands are also a birdwatchers' paradise, where blue-headed parrots, merlins, masked and blue-footed boobies, magnificent frigatebirds, brown pelicans, and neotropical cormorants may be spotted.
