Located on the Eastern end of St. George's Cay, one of the many cays of Eleuthera, Spanish Wells is one of the more attractive settlements in the Bahamas. The name was derived centuries ago when Spanish explorers declared the well water the sweetest in the Bahamas. The waters surrounding Spanish Wells are among the sweetest in the Bahamas as well. Stunning royal and aqua blue. And the beautiful deserted white sand beaches make it an ideal place to swim, snorkel, or just walk along the water's edge. Crawfishing being the primary source of income, Spanish Wells is a prospering, working settlement. While this means it may lack some to the more touristy attractions, the homes are brightly painted and meticulously landscaped. A walk, or golf-cart ride through town is an enjoyable afternoon activity. Diving, snorkeling and fishing expeditions are available from a number of commercial outfits. And while the crystal waters surrounding Spanish Wells will certainly suffice any expedition, excellent fishing off some of the most beautiful reefs in the world can be found off the north side of bordering Russel and Royal Islands.
