Amukta Island, westernmost of the Islands of Four Mountains Group in the central Aleutians, is located 240 miles southwest of Dutch Harbor. Amukta Island has a youthful stratovolcano, that encompasses most of uninhabited Amukta Island. The cone is 3.6 miles in diameter with a 1,312-ft wide summit crater. About a half dozen reports of eruptive activity are on record beginning in 1770, three of which occurred since the early 1980s suggesting that minor eruptive activity may be more frequent than the historical record portrays for this remote volcano. An eruption in February 1963, produced ash plumes and a lava flow that reached the sea. The last reported eruptive activity occurred in early July 1996.
