Kanaga Island, one of the most southerly of the Aleutian Islands, 965 km WSW of the tip of the Alaska Peninsula. The nearest settlement is Adak, on Adak Island, where a U.S. Naval Station is located. The symmetrical Kanaga stratovolcano is situated within the Kanaton caldera at the north tip of Kanaga Island. The rim of Kanaton caldera forms a 760-m-high arcuate ridge south and east of Kanaga; a lake occupies part of the SE caldera floor. The volume of subaerial dacitic tuff is smaller than would typically be associated with caldera collapse and it is possible that the caldera originated from a large debris avalanche. Several fresh lava flows from historical or late prehistorical time descend the east, south and west flanks of Kanaga.
