Semichi Island Group (52 47'N; 174 00'E) is a group of three islands, located between the east of Attu Isl. and the north-east of Agattu Island, and is a part of the most western Aleutian Islands. The group consists of the most north-western island Alaid (52 48'N, 173 55'E), the middle Nizki Island (52 46'N, 174 00'E) and the most south-eastern island Shemya (52 45'N, 174 04'E). The most outliers of the group are the Ingenstrem Rocks (52 39'N, 174 31'E), a group of scattered rocks, saved with a light and a radar-reflektor. The highest elevation is on Alaid Isl. and is the rest of a volcano with an elevation of 204 meters. All islands are of volcanic origin, sparely vegetated and sparely inhabited. The best developed island is Shemya Island with a military base, an airodrom, a DEW Station and a small settlement named Alcan Habour on its north side. The islands were discovered by the Russian Deshnew in 1648, when he sailed from the Diomedes Island Group towards south. Later on in 1741 the Germany-Baltic V.Bering sailed into the group of islands and named them. Bering found the islands inhabited by Aleutian. When in 1923 an American station on Attu Island was established, a mission station was build too on Shemya Island. With the start of World War II, Japanese troups assault Attu Island, the military airodrom on Shemya Island was established.
