Eric Cove was a trading post where traffic in coveted white fox furs thrived. Kangirsukallak, or Cape Wolstenhome, is located southeast of today’s community of Ivujivik, near the tip of the Ungava peninsula. The European explorer Henry Hudson first encountered Inuit there in 1610, and called the neck of land "Wolstenhome" after his expedition’s outfitter, Sir John Wolstenhome. In 1909, this landing place, also known as Eric Cove, became the site of what at the time was the Hudson Bay Company’s most northerly trading post in the eastern Arctic. Although the HBC left in 1933, the Eric Cove trading post remained open as a camp store until 1947. <br> The last Inuit family left Kangirsukallak for Ivujivik in 1959. In the late 1920s epidemics decimated the Inuit living around the Eric Cove post. The epidemic of 1928 reduced the Inuit population around the post to only five people.
