One of our favorite anchorages is Isla Coyote, a small island located about 35 miles north of La Paz, between Isla San Francisco and Isla San Jose. The islet is only about 200 yards in diameter, but it is the home of about twenty members of the Cuevas family, and they make their living by fishing the Sea of Cortez. When we went ashore, we gave them some of our extra supplies, and the entire family told us that we were welcome to come back and visit at any time. There are about ten buildings on the island: homes of different branches of the family, a small chapel, and a one-room schoolhouse with two desks and a chalkboard. The Cuevas family has been living on Isla Coyote (they call it Isla Pardito) for over 100 years, and it has the second largest population of all the islands in the Sea of Cortez. The surrounding waters are a turquoise blue, and the coral reefs on the west side are magnificent for snorkeling.
