Whale watching is equally fascinating because a large population of belugas migrate every summer into the waters of Hudson Bay and Churchill River. In summer, enjoy the magnificent awakening of nature when millions of wildflowers carpet the lichen cover and wildlife abounds. The region's clear, starry sky, frequently lit up by splendid northern lights, will enliven your evenings. Taking its cue from by these night-time displays, VIA Rail named the car that takes you to Churchill "Northern Spirit". While you're here, see the magnificent Wapusk National Park, where the transition from subarctic vegetation to arctic tundra is easily observed. Half the park's area is covered with water: lakes, marshes, peat bogs and rivers abound in its damp land. Visit York Factory, a historic trading post of the Hudson's Bay Company, or the historic national site of Prince of Wales Fort, which has been incredibly well restored.
