The architecture of the charming little town of Ventotene, with its pink and white houses, is typically Neopolitan and most of the buildings date from the 18th century, like the castle, the town hall and the church designed by Winspeare which is dedicated to St Candida, patron saint of the town (commemorated on 19th-20th September). Its permanent population is only 700 so facilities are relatively limited. The social life centres around 'Il Giardino', a bar-restaurant to the north of the town square and 'Maribosa', a bar-disco of dubious repute beside the Roman port. There are a number of other small bars, a small supermarket, bakers, newsagent and a bank which can be horribly slow if you wish to exchange money (take your passport and be prepared to wait!)
