Sudbury Reef is a large complex of patch reefs in the Cairns Section of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The crescent-shaped reef is 8800 ha in area, extending 11 km in length. A small sand cay occurs on the northwestern extremity. The patch reefs around the grounding site are typical for many mid-shelf reefs, with only moderate reef development and a predominance of soft corals.
