The town of Kirkfield is less than 2 miles from the lock. Located on Hwy 48 between Coboconk and Gamebridge. Sir William Mackenzie, co-founder of the Canadian Northern Railway (CNR) was born here in 1859. The home he built in the late 1880's is now a bed & breakfast Inn. The Kirkfield Festival is held every year on Labour Day Weekend.
