Fort William lies at the heart of Lochaber and is the area's natural capital. In addition, the town commands an important position within the Highlands and Scotland - being easily accessible from Glasgow and the central belt, and in turn providing good access to the north of Scotland via the Great Glen to Inverness and west to Ardnamurchan and the islands of the inner and outer Hebrides via Mallaig.
