Pontailler was a town of strategic importance but all that remains of this period is a stele embedded in a garden wall of the church. Nowadays, many tourists flock to this town on the border of Burgundy and Franche-Comté, drawn by the prospect of bathing in the clean waters of the river. The beach is surveyed by lifeguards in the summer months. Fishing enthusiasts and nature lovers also set up residence in these parts for a few days – or a few years.
