The town was originally built in the 13th century when the Dukes of Burgundy bought the salt works of nearby Salins les Bains. To protect the imports of the salt into Burgundy, a castle was built and the town fortified with battlements and turrets. The salt trade was based here and the town gradually prospered and grew in importance.Saint Jean de Losne, for many more recent years has been a bargee’s town, and has now turned towards tourism and pleasure boats to become the most important centre for inland boating activities in France with moorings for over 350 boats. You will find modern moorings with water and electricity, all technical services including drydocks and cranes, chandleries and all other shops near to the water. The local tourist office is available year round to help you get the most out of the region.
