One of the objectives of the Galapagos National Park is to protect and recover endangered species. Especially those threatened by external factors such as introduced species, or natural disasters, and they have been working with the Charles Darwin Foundation for some time to protect the most iconic creatures of Galapagos - the Giant Tortoise. At the same time as they have been working to control and eradicate introduced species, one of the methods used to guarantee the preservation of the Giant Tortoises has been the creation of breeding centres. There, tortoise eggs are protected and hatched and kept until they are 4 or 5 years old and are safe from predators (e.g. goats, wild pigs etc). Afterwards they are repatriated to their islands of origin. At first this work was done with a few species in the first breeding centre in Santa Cruz. After a few years, with very satisfactory results, a Centre was built on Isabela Island to look after the tortoises on South Isabela. Based on this experience, and the success of the breeding centres, a new breeding centre has been built on San Cristobal - at a place known as Cerro Colorado, 26.4 km from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. It will be inaugurated on 18 February 2004. This new Centre has 11 hectares, and currently there are 37 tortoises there - Geochelone chathamensis - of different ages. The Centre has feeding spaces constructed to mimic the natural environment. Visitors will be to visit the island and the Centre. There are a series of interpretative paths which will allow visitors to observe the incubators and the pre-adaptation corrals. There will also be a projection and an interpretation room. It will allow scientists and students to carry out comparative studies about tortoises in the wild and in captivity. This Centre will help guarantee the sustainability of the San Cristobal Giant tortoise population.
