The village lies on the right bank of the river Labe (Elbe) at an average height of 158m above sea level. The temporal range of settlements is indicated by numerous findings from all pre-historic eras from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. The first records of the name of the village being used come from the foundation charter of the chapter of St. Stephen, given by Spytihne<caron>v II. (Zernosech - Sernossiceh terra rusticalis). A written mention of the village is, however, in the "B" section of this charter, dating from the year 1218. The name of the village came about from the type of work of its residents - the cutting of large millstones. According to preserved documents, the history of wine-growing around Velke Z<caron>ernoseky, a village situated on the right bank of the River Labe, stretches back at least to the 10th century. Cistercian monks tend to be regarded as founders of the wine-growing industry in this region, but their estate at Zernoseky only dates back to the 13th century. These monks built large wine cellars at Z<caron>ernoseky in 1251 that have been preserved to the present day; wine is still matured here in traditional oak barrels. In these vaulted cellars visitors can taste wine directly at the barrel, they can relax over a glass of wine, or they can buy some bottles of wine of their own choice.
