Mackinac Island, Michigan, is a popular vacation spot located on Lake Huron, between the lower and upper peninsulas. One can take a ferry across the Mackinac Straits and land at the main harbor pictured above or fly into the small Mackinac airport. The modes of transportation on the Island are: horse drawn carriage, bicycle or walking - there are no motor vehicles on the Island. The main harbor is the focal point of the downtown area with people arriving and departing throughout the day on several ferry lines. The Island is 80% state park with forested area, plus many horse trails and foot paths. During the off season, Mackinac Island has approximately 500 permanent residents.
