Kap Arkona is the northernmost point of Rügen. Here, the first "modern" lighthouse was completed in 1827 according to the building plans of the famous Berlin architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. This light was extinguished in 1902 and, in addition to it, a lighthouse that was nearly 7 m taller was built. Its electric flashing light can be seen today from a distance of 23 nautical miles. On a clear day there is a fascinating view over the sea from both lighthouses. Apart from this, there are the remains of a Slavic castle complex near Kap Arkona, which in an impressive way are a testimony to the will of the former inhabitants of the island to defend themselves. From Kap Arkona, a hike to Vitte above the shore or also along the stony beach is available. The small fishing village is picturesquely situated by the sea. Here, fishermen always offer freshly smoked fish.
