Located north of Yakutat Bay where the Gulf of Alaska begins to curve westward, Kayak Island is uninhabited, except for bears and foxes. The island is about 20 miles long and only 2 miles wide. Chugach Eskimos (Alutiiq) had summer fish camps here, which were abandoned in the mid-19th century. The first Europeans landed on the Northwest Coast of North America on Kayak Island in July, 1741.
