The Town of Trinity, located on the northeast coast of Newfoundland, was discovered by the Portuguese explorer, Gaspar Corte Real, in the year 1500. This historic town has been the site of many North American firsts. In 1798, the Reverend John Clinch made use of the smallpox vaccination in Trinity for the first time in North America. It was also the site where Sir Richard Whitbourne, the earliest recorded English visitor to Trinity, held the first Court of Admiralty in 1615. Whitbourne first visited Trinity Harbor in 1579 and in his famous publication "A Discourse and Discovery of New-Founde-Land," proclaimed that Trinity had the "... best and largest harbor in all the Land." Trinity truly has an outstanding harbor, and within its 21 miles of shoreline lies a set of sheltered coves and landings where scores of vessels can be accommodated. With more than 2000 artifacts on display, including the oldest fire pump in North America, passengers will be fascinated as they tour the Trinity Historical Museum and Archives. Trinity is famous for its many early 19th century homes such as the Lester Garland House, which was rebuilt in 1997 to the 1819-1820 period incorporating some of the original bricks. This was the home of the first Speaker of the House of Assembly and now holds a museum and learning center. While in Trinity, passengers will not want to miss a performance of the Trinity Pageant. It is the story of Newfoundland as told by "locals" from Trinity. Taking its audience on a walking tour around the Town of Trinity where they visit a pirates' lair, a fish drying operation, a rowdy courthouse and many other locations, the Trinity Pageant is sure to delight and entertain. The interpretative staff, located at the Trinity Interpretation Center, will enlighten passengers with information on the establishment of Trinity as a community in the 17th century and its development as a base for the 18th-19th century England-Newfoundland trade. Trinity is also home to many high quality craft shops where passengers may purchase knitwear, quilts, wooden crafts, home spun wool and crocheting. Original works by renowned Newfoundland artists are available for purchase in many stores.
