The Flinders Island Group comprises seven islands that lie off Cape Melville in Princess Charlotte Bay, approximately 350km north of Cairns. Their traditional Aboriginal owners, the Yiithuwarra people, made a successful claim to the islands in this group in 1994. Today the traditional owners work in conjunction with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service to care for and manage the island group. Of the seven islands in the group, the two larger islands, Stanley and Flinders Islands, are rugged continental islands. The other islands in the group include Clack, Maclear, Denham, Blackwood and King. Bush walking, bird watching, nature study, learning about Aboriginal culture and viewing Aboriginal rock art. Stanley Island has a self-guided bush-tucker walk, with interpretive signs, detailing the names and traditional uses for many of the plant species in the island group. Stanley Island is also the site of a significant rock art gallery, which is open for public viewing from the boardwalk and viewing platforms provided. The boardwalk and lookout include interpretative displays to allow visitors an inside look into the importance of the area and artwork of the Yiithuwarra people.
