Located near Pickensville, AL, the Tom Bevill Visitor center serves as the main visitor center for the Tenn-Tom waterway. An authentic reproduction of a mid-1800's plantation mansion, it contains displays related to history and development of the Tombigbee River and the Waterway. Moored beside the center is the U.S. Snagboat Montgomery, one of the last steam powered stern-wheelers to ply the waters of the south. The 108-foot snag boat is a retired sternwheeler with a crane mounted on its bow for lifting logs and other debris that caused jam-ups along the river and in the locks. In 2002, the Montgomery was moved up on land and placed on permanent display at the Bevill Visitor Center.<br> Adjacent is Tom Bevill Lock and Dam, where visitors are invited to watch vessels "lock through' as they travel between the Gulf of Mexico and the river ports of mid-America. The Tom Bevill Lock and Dam is approximately 1 mile southwest of Pickensville in Pickens County, AL.
