Genevosa Island, also known as Tower Island is a low volcano the barely reaches above the surface of the ocean. With its peculiar horseshoe shape them it is one of the smallest islands in the Galapagos. Genevosa is located in the inner part of Darwin Bay, 8-10 hours away from Santa Cruz. Immediately upon arrival visitors are exposed to the abundance of sea birds that inhabit the island. Frigate birds, red-footed and masked boobies, swallow-tailed gulls, storm petrels, white-cheeked pintail ducks and Galapagos doves are just a few of the numerous birds that breed by the thousands on Genevosa. The island is also home to the indigenous Galapagos Mockingbird and to the Galapagos Dove. Behind the small beach are a number of small tide pools, where lava gulls and yellow-crowned night herons are seen. These areas are also frequented by feeding wandering tattlers, turnstones, whimbrels fiddler crabs, and, in search for food. The abundance in the different types of bird species makes Genevosa a prime location for exotic Galapagos bird watching. A main attraction is Prince Phillip's Steps on the south tip of the island. This location is of importance, because it is the major breeding ground for the tree loving Red Footed Booby and the ground Masked Booby. Prince Phillip’s Steps is also home to four species of the famous finches: the Large Ground Finch, the Sharp-beaked Ground Finch, the Large Cactus Finch and the Warbler Finch.
