San Cristobal, also known as Chatham, is geologically one of the oldest islands of the Galapagos. This island is home to the capital and administrative center, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, which is located on the west side of the island. A small naval museum, souvenir shops, and houses make up this small bayside capital village. The three main visitor sites of the Galapagos, El Junco Lagoon, Kicker Rock (Leon Dormido) and Isla Lobos, can be found on the island of San Cristobal. El Junco Lagoon is located in the highlands, at an altitude of about seven hundred meters. El Junco is the only considerable fresh water lake in the enchanted Galapagos. The lake and its direct surroundings create a gorgeous landscape whose beauty is fueled by the humid zone that this island lies within. El Junco is semi round and about six meters deep. Its surrounding vegetation is comprised of miconia bushes and endemic tree ferns. While in this area you are likely to catch a glimpse of the white-cheeked pintail ducks and common gallinues who call this majestic lake home. The second major visitor center, Kicker Rock, is a breathtaking tuff cone rising 500 feet from the ocean. Erosion has split this large rock and created its distinctive shape, the outline of a sleeping lion. The split of this rock has created a passageway through which small vessels can traverse. At a dive sight near this characteristic rock, one can observe turtles, morays, schools of king angelfish, and creolefish. The last visitor sight of Islas Lobos is less than an hour away from the main land of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Islas Lobos, when translated to English mean Sea Lion Island. This site has a somewhat tranquil atmosphere not found on other parts of the island. Islas Lobos is a seasonal location for the blue footed boobie, as well as home to quite a few friendly sea lions.
