Vágoy and Mykines are amongst the most known and sought after tourist destinations in the Faroes. Nature lovers have visited the islands as long as anyone can remember. Vágoy island receives its name from the fjords called: Sandavágur, Miđvágur and Sřrvágur. These are also the names of the villages there, with approx. 800 – 1000 inhabitants each. There are other small villages: Vatnsoyrar, Břur and Gásadalur. In total approx. 2500 people inhabit the island of Vágoy.The largest lochs in the Faroes are also on Vágoy: Leitisvatn/Sřrvágsvatn and Fjallavatn, and the smaller lochs, Hviltkinnavatn and Vatnsdalsvatn. All excellent trout lochs, attracting anglers from many different countries. From the largest lochs run the streams creating the waterfalls Břsdalafossur and Reipsafossur – in the most beautiful and magnificent surroundings, not to forget the varied bird/plant life and geological formations found in the area.The airport is on Vágoy. First stop from Vágoy to Streymoy is the village of Vestmanna where boat trips are organised to the well-known and impressive bird cliffs 'Vestmannabjřrgini'.Some of the most well-known historical artefacts and stories are connected to the island of Vágoy. The house “Kálvalíđ” is one of the oldest known houses in the Faroes. It is supposed to have housed the infamous vicar’s widow Beinta (Barbara). Today the house serves as a museum. One of the few Runic stones confirming pre-viking settlement, was discovered in the village of Sandavágur and may be seen in the church there.
