Although situated a mere 20 km to the south of Chalon-sur-Saône, Tournus already has a distinctly southern air about it. The houses of this little town, covered with hollow tiles in many shades of pink, huddle against each other in slightly curved rows. The spires of the churches, Saint-Philibert to the north and Sainte-Madeleine to the south, emerge in perfect harmony from the patchwork of roofs. Situated in the shadow of Saint-Philibert, the Perrin-de-Puycousin Burgundian Museum, with its collections of traditional costumes and Bresse furniture, is a striking reminder of country life in former times. Meanwhile, the town’s art and local archaeology collections are currently being reorganised at the museum dedicated to the locally-born artist Jean-Baptiste Greuze and housed in the former Hôtel-Dieu which will also include a hospital museum.
