Isla San Jose, north of La Paz and close to the town of Dolores, lies just off the eastern shore of Baja California in the Sea of Cortes. Of particular interest is a large forest of giant cardon cacti, the world’s tallest cactus as well as over 80 types of other cactus. Keen-eyed birders may see as many as 25 species, including black-crowned night herons, great blue herons, green herons, reddish and snowy egrets, brown pelicans, and neotropical cormorants. The island also has a magnificent white sandy beach and a mangrove lined lagoon.
