The historic town of Argos has lived and grown up on the same site for five thousand years. It is the commercial centre of the Argolid, with a thriving agriculture and a developed industry specializing in the processing of agricultural products. It also possesses a wealth of ancient monuments, chief among them being the 4th century BC Theatre, unique of its kind in that it is hewn entirely out of the rock. In the summer artistic performances of high quality are staged in it. In the same area one can visit the well-preserved Roman Baths, the Ancient Odeum, the Agora and the Tribunal. West of the city is the hill of Larissa, and on its summit the splendid ancient Castle, the crown of Argos. On the side of the hill stands the historic church of the Panayia tis Katakekrimmenis, and to the north the smaller, verdant hill of Aspida and the prehistoric cemetery of Dirada, with the Mycenaean tombs. The visitor can see the very important collection of archaeological finds in the town's Archaeological Museum. Argos, however, is not only antiquities; there is also the modern town, pulsating with life and movement, with its up-to-date shops, the Municipal Market, housed in a fine neoclassical building, and the public market held every Saturday, which attracts thousands of people from all over the province of Argos. Then there are the historic Capodistrias Barracks and impressive neoclassical buildings like the Kallieryeion, the Town Hall, the Konstantopoulos Megaton, General Tsokfis's house, and others. All these things are there for the modern visitor to enjoy as he becomes acquainted with old and new Argos.
