Gillette is located on the rolling plains between the Big Horn Mountains and the Black Hills in northeastern Wymoming. It is the largest city in the region and the county seat of Campbell County. The primary industry in Gillette is the production of coal. Over 30% of the nation's coal supply is mined in Campbell County. The city of Gillette boasts the name "Energy Capital of the Nation" because of its prominence in the mining of coal, oil, and coal bed methane gas. Gillette is also a commercial center for the agricultural and ranching industry in the area. The population of Gillette is 19,646 (2000 census). Gillette began as a railroad terminal in 1891. It was named after a surveyor for the Burlington and Missouri Railway, Edward Gillette, who was lauded by the company for saving it five miles of track and thirty bridges. The railway continues to have an important place in the life of the city, as it transports Campbell County's coal to power plants across the country.
