Nestled between the Snake and Clearwater Rivers, Lewiston and Clarkston boast a rich history and diversity for even the most discriminating outdoor or cultural enthusiast. Hunters enjoy the elk, deer, and water fowl that make their home in the "Banana Belt" climate. National forests and private land just minutes from town provide excellent game. Anglers also are rewarded for their efforts on the myriad of rivers and streams in the area. Steelhead, bass, white sturgeon, trout, kokanee, chinook, and many other species of fish are amply represented. Hiking, picnicking, camping, and berry picking are easily accessible. Just 3 miles south of Lewiston is Hells Gate State Park. Equipped with camping facilities, a beach, a marina, and hiking and horseback riding trails, the park is a favorite of summer visitors. A variety of outfitters and jetboat and cruise ship operators provide access to the area's waters. Barges laden with grain or wood products can be found on the rivers slowly making the 465-mile journey west to ocean waters. Idaho's only seaport and oldest city, named for Meriwether Lewis, boomed in 1860 due to gold being found in the region. Lewiston became the state's capital in 1863. The city retained the title only a few years before the capital was moved to Boise. Lewiston is the home of Lewis-Clark State College. The college originally was established in 1893 as Lewiston State Normal School and was a teacher training institution. Now the college provides professional, arts, and science baccalaureate degree programs and excellent vocational and technical programs. Cultural opportunities abound in Lewiston. The Lewiston Civic Theater, with its 25-year history, supplies the valley with popular productions. Lewis-Clark State College Series brings professional opera, ballet, music and theater to the area. The city also boasts local musicians, artisans, and museums. During April, Lewiston sponsors the Dogwood Festival. The week-long celebration includes an arts and crafts fair, garden tours, sporting events, concerts and plays. All the festivities happen under the blossoms of the valley's celebrated dogwoods. The Clearwater and Snake River Recreation Trail accommodates walkers, runners, and cyclists on a 25-mile greenbelt, of paved pathways. From the greenbelt one can enjoy the sights and sounds of river activity. Also for the sports lover, Lewiston supports the "I Made the Grade" bicycle race. The race starts at Chief Timothy State Park, west of Clarkston, and twists and turns to the top of the formidable Lewiston Hill. Lewiston's rich history and beautiful climate have encouraged many people to call Lewiston home. With its diverse outdoor sports and rich cultural opportunities, Lewiston is well worth exploring.
